A full day south of Yerevan. Khor Virap sits a few hundred metres from the Turkish border with Mount Ararat filling the sky behind it; Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned in its pit for thirteen years. Noravank hides at the end of a red canyon, with the two-storey Burtelashen church. In Areni you taste local wines at a family cellar and visit the cave where a 6,100-year-old winery was found.
